The warming sun was to our backs
as we rowed to our island's shore,
our boats half-filled with a meager catch of the day.
The first thing that we noticed strange
was the bubbling beneath our oars
& the haunting mist that rose from the flattened waves.
& then we heard it: like a train come rumbling through.
We turned our heads to see what was behind.
And then we saw it. There was nothing we could do.
It was ev'ry fear and nightmare all combined.

    WHEN THE WAVE- CAME, I never was more scared.
    I thought for sure that I had had my final breath.
    WHEN THE WAVE- CAME, nobody was prepared.
    How can you be prepared for a rushing wall of death?

It came so quick. It threw us up
& it tossed us into the sea.
I saw my boat snap in two as I was pushed down.
Submerged & tumbling, spinning, churning,
I desp'rately had to breathe.
As I fought for life, it looked like I'd end up drowned.
& then I reached it: all the surface & the sky.
I gasped for air & clung to a floating board.
& then I felt it, so much fear deep down inside.
What had happened to my wife & son on shore?

    CHORUS

        They had been down on the beach,
        helping me by cleaning fish.
        My only wish was that they were alive & safe.
        I only found one sign of each:
        a sandal that my wife had made
        & a blue striped shirt from my son's last holiday.

    CHORUS

        & still I look & still I search
        from the first faint rays of each dawn   ...
