BOTTOMS UP, LIGHT 'EM UP
( I Used to Drink Bud )
Copyright 2004 - MickTerry.com

6/8
I used to drink Bud, yeah, but then I got wiser.
My head was like mud. I'd believed advertisers.
Now, I'm starting to think and I don't want to spoil it.
I've had quite enough of my head in the toilet.

BOTTOMS UP, LIGHT 'EM UP, move 'em out, Rawhide!
Sometimes we're like cattle being taken for a ride.
BOTTOMS UP, LIGHT 'EM UP, move 'em out, Rawhide!
At times I've got to say, "I'm going the other way
and I don't care who says I'm not Kool".

    CHORUS

I used to smoke grass and I liked what I tasted.
I'd act like an ass and I really was wasted.
Now, I'm using my time to be much more productive
and leaving behind drugs that can be seductive.

You've got to fit in. You've got to belong.
They're there to remind you in movies and songs.
You'd better not buck such time-honored traditions.
You'd better not differ too much.

I tried cigarettes and each time I was coughing.
My lungs were perplexed. They were telling me something.
I have read smoking ads and they're sounding like fiction.
My best friend has died from tobacco addiction.

First verse begun after driving past the Anheiser-Busch beer
brewery in Van Nuys, CA, with its subtle aroma of hops.
(Celebrating his 21st birthday, Mick Terry totally stopped drinking
alcohol & smoking marijuana, realizing that the only reason he was
partaking of them was due to what he felt as social expectation.)

3rd verse & chorus written after seeing the heavily media-pushed
photo of a haggard US soldier in Iraq, cigarette dangling from mouth.
( Product placement?
Tobacco companies' contribution to the war effort: free cigarettes. )

Lyrics finished two years (almost to the exact day) after
the death of best friend, Jeff Sturman, thanks to cigarettes:
stroke, lung cancer, kidney failure, heart disease.

To other drinking song lyrics:   I PASSED THE BAR
WISHFUL DRINKING
GOD, HOW I'M GLAD
YEAH, HE WAS COOL
WHISPERING TOO LOUD
DRUNK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN
BOTTOMLESS BOTTLE (AGAIN)
IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOME PARTY
To other anti-smoking song lyrics:   YOU'VE GOT A LOT OF BALLS
I CAN'T BELIEVE I TOUCHED IT
THE WORLD IS NOT YOUR ASHTRAY
To the TOP
