The colors are amazing if divorced from what occurred:
an artist's palette rich in violet hues.
But nothing is erasing all the pain that won't be heard,
that's deep beneath the hurt of any bruise.

The mirror doesn't show her anything she wants to see,
like why she puts up with the crap she does.
And each time he's so sorry and each time has her believe
that there's no other person she can trust.

    Like DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH,
    some things seem good enough
to hold on to with the hope someday they'll shine.
    Like DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH,
    some things are really tough.
And to tough it out is how she is inclined.

She tells herself he means well, but he's under lots of stress
and tends to lose control when he gets home.
The broken lamps & candles, she will clean up every mess,
but it's not easy fixing broken bones.

    CHORUS

The neighbors do nothing. They don't want to intrude.
"A man's home is his castle with all inside."
The neighbors do nothing. After all, it's nothing new.
And who are we to judge someone, besides?

The colors are amazing, all the flashing reds and blues,
the broken glass and body slumped below.
But now who will be raising both their little children through
the years to come and what they'll need to know?

    Like DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH,
    some things seem good enough
to hold on to with the hope someday they'll shine.
    Like DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH,
    some things are really tough.
And to tough it out was how she was inclined.
