Half-empty stale cans of soda, warm- beers,
stacks of pizza boxes half-way to the sun,
dried egg foo yong cartons squished down in the chairs,
coats and socks and jackets left where they'd been dumped.

Three weeks of pots, pans and dishes fill the sink.
Ants and roaches may have grabbed the missing girl.
Long-soaked with cat pee, the matted carpet stinks.
And the rookie on this crime scene wants to hurl.

MUST BE THE MAID'S YEAR OFF
    or else some Kansas twister.
MUST BE THE MAID'S YEAR OFF.
No one really lives like this, do they?

We'd gotten calls from the neighbors 'bout the stench,
where as usu'lly all the calls were 'bout their fights:
cursing and screaming and banging on the fence.
But these last three weeks were quiet ev'ry night.

Now, as it was, could have been at least five stiffs
hidden under all those piles and stacks and heaps.
We couldn't find just one corpse, much less a fifth.
But I'm pretty sure we found the guilty creep.

    CHORUS

His wife left him three weeks ago,
now staying with her sister in Brazil.
The phone number he doesn't know.
Never had it. Now he hopes he never will.

I was so sure he was guilty, I just knew
'though we tore that house apart from bottom up.
Fined for disorderly conduct's all we could do
besides condemning it before gas lines erupt.

I was so sure he was guilty, but the courts
said he'd walk and soon enough he disappeared.
Out in the desert, coyotes found a corpse.
It was hers, but way too late at least five years.

    CHORUS
