( Bomb shelter song lyrics - nuclear war )
ONCE THE DARK WINGS
Copyright 1998 - MickTerry.com

My old Grand-Pop, in his own way,
has proved to be a wise man,
for having built, back in those days,
a shelter from the blind men.
At first, they called it luxury:
second only to a pool.
Then, as the eastern world broke free,
they'd change their ridicule.
They put him down for having feared
the worst of human nature
as frozen warriors disappeared
with changing legislatures.

    Who could see today?
We'd been blinded by the light.
    Who can see today,
ONCE THE DARK WINGS took to flight?

The long descent, the buried room:
its use three times converted.
As kids, we named the place, "The Tomb",
regardless how perverted.
At first, it changed into a den
when Grand-Pop wanted quiet.
Then it became a storage pen
when my dad went to buy it.
And now my kids have made the thing
a play room of their own.
Who would have thought it would come full swing?
Who could have ever known?

    CHORUS

It didn't take much to start it off:
        a squabble far away.
How could we think anyone might win
once the whole world starts to play?

Now, here we sit beneath the ground,
just waiting for some fresh news,
as if someone might be around
who'd tell us of their own views.
My family has all taken ill:
contaminated water.
I don't know how much longer still,
as fallout adds to slaughter.
At first, the thing that saved our ass
was distance from ground zeros.
But given time enough to pass,
there won't be any heroes.

    CHORUS

6-9-07:
While berating North Korea & Iran to drop nuclear programs,
GWBush pushes for replacement of aging US nuclear warheads
with sophisticated new ones.
Russia, China & others feel provoked to begin new arms race.
Who benefits? Bush's old friends, the American arms dealers.

10-8-06:

North Korea joins that explosive elitist group of nuclear nations.
For all its extortionist tactics & bluster,
if it had wanted to keep the fact a secret, it could have.
More important than having the Bomb
was having the rest of the world know that it has it.

1988:

This was originally written as India & Pakistan were posturing
& saber-rattling, amassing troops along their borders
when Pakistan declared its nuclear weapons program.
Unfortunately, the threat of the possibility implied
in these lyrics seems to occasionally be recurring.
God forbid it should ever come to pass.

To other anti-war pro-peace song lyrics:   C.O.
To other war song lyrics:   FACE TO FACE
CAN WE TALK?
HEY, ITS NOT ME
LAND OF DREAMS
CHILDREN OF WAR
BEHIND THE LINES
THE NUKE'S A HAZARD
BIN LADEN, BIN LADEN
NIGHT OF DYING MOON
SADDAMI, SADDAMI, BALONEY
I WANT HIM BACK FROM IRAQ
I'M LOOKING FOR YOUNG MEN
WHY ARE THEY SHOOTING AT ME?
EXPERIMENTS COME, EXPERIMENTS GO
To the TOP
