( Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper
airplane crash song lyrics:   February 3, 1959 )

THE ONE THAT WALKED AWAY
( WHAT DO YOU DO? )
Copyright 2007 - MickTerry.com

It was brutally cold that night when the show was over.
Guess I tried to be bold that night: shared the vision that I saw.
But then they scoffed at my prediction,
wouldn't let it change a single thing.
I felt horribly old that night, never again to hear them sing.

WHAT DO YOU DO knowing your friends will be goners?
WHAT DO YOU DO and not betray?
WHAT DO YOU DO when they're all calling you bonkers?
I am THE ONE THAT WALKED AWAY.

It was blindingly white that night & the snow was driving.
Gave us quite a big fright that night on that cold bus thru the storm.
But all the while we're pushing forward,
I knew that their plane was going to crash.
& it hurt to know quite outright any old second was their last.

    CHORUS

        They'd offered me a seat
on that warm puddle jumper plane.
I could miss the freezing rigors of the drive.
But I didn't take that seat
& they'd called me just pure insane.
If I'd insisted they not go, maybe they'd still be alive.

Wind had violently howled that night & on into morning
with a screaming so foul that night that I knew that they were gone.
But when we reached our destination,
all we heard was that the plane was lost.
Now it's taken me since that flight trying to figure what it's cost.

    CHORUS

2-3-1959:
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper
died in a small plane crash in an Iowa snowstorm.
Buddy Holly had rented that plane for his band to avoid the crowded,
ailing tour bus with a faulty heater.
Tommy Allsup
(BH guitarist) lost his seat to Richie Valens on a coin toss.
Waylon Jennings
(BH bassist) had given his seat to ill J.P.Richardson
(The Big Bopper).
Parting with his friend, Holly teased, "I hope your old bus crashes".
In reply, Jennings joked, "Well, hell, I hope your old plane crashes".

Although invited to be on that plane, Dion DiMucci continued safely
with The Belmonts
in the cold, unreliable tour bus to the next concert.
An unknown local 16-year old, Bobby Vee, substituted for Buddy Holly.
Fabian & Paul Anka were also added to the show.
