RUBBER BULLETS

Just what did I do that was so evil?
Did you see me do anything wrong?
No, I wasn't aware there were problems way over there.
& now you're using your baton
to encourage me to move along.
Were we such a threat to your own safety?
Did you see a threat to anyone's life?
I was trying to help someone your friends already felled.
And then you come up from behind,
your baton connecting with my spine.
RUBBER BULLETS fired at the crowd.
RUBBER BULLETS, two hundred and forty rounds.
RUBBER BULLETS, for crying out loud,
for crying out loud.
You want us to run in that direction.
But how can I run when I'm knocked to the ground?
All our camera gear, are we supposed to leave it all here?
And as you fire another round,
who's recording what is going down?
CHORUS
MacArthur Park is pelted before it's dark,
all the short brown bodies falling down.
Someone let the bullies out again.
I don't think that I can take it,
'cause my head, they're trying to break it.
And I'll never have that sense of peace again.
Oh, no. Oh,- no.-
CHORUS
Is it any wonder most of all the injuries reported
were reporters?
Is it any wonder someone might just be afraid,
if they spoke up or complained, they'd be deported?
Mayday! Mayday! You've got blood on your hands.
Mayday! Mayday! Just who is in command?

5-1-07:
With 3 hours still remaining for a peaceful immigration rally in L.A.,
a small group of protesters threw rocks & plastic bottles at police.
With reinforcements called in, police in riot gear moved through
MacArthur Park in skirmish line formation.
They clubbed and fired 240 rounds of "less-than-lethal" projectiles
at anyone in their way, including reporters, cameramen/women
& families with children. There were few arrests of those targeted.
Few people knew of the initial violence or of the order to disperse
delivered only in English from a helicopter.
8 policemen injured. 10 injuries treated (7 were media personnel).
With much indignation expressed over the attacks on media people,
it seemed that little was said about the rights of peaceful
demonstrators to not be abused and injured by police,
almost as if such abuse can be expected.
