THE SIMPLE LIFE

For the welfare reports, he was "homeless".
Where his tent had been pitched, he was "jobless".
Maybe down on his luck, maybe life really sucked,
maybe shifting his gears in the last couple years
'cause he wanted to live ... THE SIMPLE LIFE.
Rumors said Cort once lived in the high life.
People said he'd become just a low life.
When he came to the tracks, he was often attacked
'cause he didn't fit in with the others who'd been
several years living in ... THE SIMPLE LIFE.
Now, here was a cat who didn't give a crap
'bout the rat race.
They said he once had it all, but he let it all fall
when he gave up that old futile chase.
No one shared their food with the new stranger,
not 'til three dogs brought imminent danger.
When Cort helped save Old Ben, then they welcomed him in,
finally starting to trust, finally opening up,
sharing how life was in ... THE SIMPLE LIFE.
One night Cort took his tent & belongings,
disappeared with no trace & no warnings.
He'd blown in with the wind, gone as quickly again.
He just had the one coat where he stuffed all these notes,
saying how life was in ... THE SIMPLE LIFE.
Now a newspaper blows down the alley,
& it comes to a rest on Weird Sally.
Old Ben reads it out loud to their own little crowd:
'nother in-depth report from some author named Cort,
telling how life is in ... THE SIMPLE LIFE.
