Granted, although not as fast or flashy as some other guitarists,
David Gilmour is one of the most lyrical, passionate & tasteful.
Does being the fastest make one the best?
Don't subtlety, nuance & melodic substance account for anything?
How about melodic memorability & staying power?
Not to mention dynamics & multilayered guitar parts
that really blend with & enhance the arrangements?
All or the above & much more contributing to the final desired product:
communication with & a connection to the listener(s)
on an emotional level.
How does his playing make people feel?
David Gilmour's guitar work deeply moves me (& many others).
It is very gripping, poignant & bittersweet.
Prior to David Gilmour, Pink Floyd may have existed,
but they did not excel.
The level of musicianship of the entire group was raised
by a quantum leap upon his entry.
(e.g., compare Richard Wright's keyboard work before & after.)
Gilmour's contributions to the group & to the world of music
have been immense.
